Dennis gets a FLIGHT

Dennis gets a well deserved great flight at Hat Creek after being stuck fighting fires for all of us most of the summer. Hope to fly with you next time Dennis.

Labor day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend 2015brought a fairly large group of pilots to Hat Creek to fly and have fun. There was only one day of good flying when everyone who wanted to got to fly. The air was really friendly with thermals taking pilots to 7k' and 8k'.

More BOL and FYGO 2015 pics

Some more great photos of the Best of Lift 2015 and the truncated smokey FYGO 2015 from Ken and Marti Hawes

Best of Lift 2015

Some more Pictures from the BOL fly in and a short video of landings taken by Debbie J and a few other camp and BBQ shots.

We were lucky to get three soarable clear days. Although everybody did get to fly and we had an injury free weekend, we did have a couple of folks who launched early, succumb to the magnetism of LZ 1. As Page would have said, a classic case of  "premature aviation"

The FYGO right after the BOL was quite smoky. Only one day flown at Soldier Creek Rim with 4 pilots landing between launch and Cedarville. Bill T seemed a little lost in the haze and flew some miles south only to finally head back north and land at the Cedarville airport. We still had fun camping at Lassen Creek as always and the great breakfasts at the Davis Creek store checking weather on the wifi and checking the smoke. May have to check it again if the smoke clears.

BOL 2015

Wow what a great weekend! Flew Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Saturday there were around 20 hg's and 10 pg's in the air and the fantastic freeflight camaraderie was enjoyed by all at the fantastic BBQ.

Big thanks to everyone for having a great time and all the folks helping and working together to make this happen. Pat B our amazing cook, Wei Wei tirelessly cleaning up deserve a special mention but there were many folks helping to make this fly in a success.

Scotty and Dottie performed tirelessly and seem to be enjoying their new found infamy.

Send me more photos and any stories of your BOL 2015 weekend. Thank you all.

August Smoky Weather

Some pretty smoky weather at Hat Creek lately.

The 6th was so smoky we declined to fly. You could not see Burney mountain from launch.

The 7th was clearer and looked more hopeful. The many thunderstorms seemed to have dissipated and 4 pilots headed to launch, After launching and getting above the rim while heading north, a large thunderstorm was sitting right next to Bald mountain. We all landed pretty quickly and got to watch lightning over launch as we broke down and got our gliders bagged before the rain.

The 8th had less thunderstorm activity but was still a little smoky and hazy but everyone got to fly with a few Hat Creek first timers in the bunch all having a good time in the mildly rowdy air with pilots getting to around 6500' .

The 9th was the first day in more than a week without any thunderstorm activity. The smoke and haze cleared considerably. Everyone got to fly. A lot of happy pilots.

HCVFD BBQ, Some July 4th week pics

HCVFD BBQ  next weekend.  A lot of pilots were at Hat Creek over the week of the 4th and rumors of some good flights.  Have Pics/Videos/Stories  send them to Editor

Dates for HCVFD BBQ and Best of Lift Fly In

Several HCPA board members and region 2 Director had a meeting with the Forest Service to discuss the future of Hat Creek Rim. It was a rewarding meeting and the Forest Service are happy to have the free flight community work with them. When there is any more definite information we will update club members.

We are planning on some events. The HCVFD BBQ is coming up July18th 2.00pm-5.00pm at the Hereford Ranch RV park.  With the excellent timing you can gorge yourself on the “Deep Pit BBQ” that this event is famous for and support the local Volunteer Fire Department  (the 1st responders for the Rim)  and get to go fly the glass off afterwards. A win win situation! You could also buy some of the T Shirts left over from last year as the VFD get 1/2 of all those sales.

The Best Of Lift Fly In 2015 is scheduled for August 15th. This fly in was cancelled twice last year due to fires and weather. This year we can keep our fingers crossed. The BOL fly in is an ongoing memorial fly in for Page Perrin.  The first one soon after Pages passing was very well attended. This will be the 2nd one.

The "Fly Your Glass Off” Fly in  started in 2003/4 lapsed for many years and restarted a few years ago will be “taking off” right after the BOL fly in on Aug 16th.
"The FYGO traditionally seeks out the best glass offs” in NE California. The favorite being Sugar Hill in Modoc county with a glass off flight 28 miles up range to Lakeview. Northerly winds will take us to Gallatin Peak by Eagle lake, East winds to Soldier Creek Rim, and good old reliable Hat Creek if weather does not cooperate elsewhere. Traditionally the “Fly In” will last until pilots have had enough.
